Being An Instructor

It is teaching skiing or snowboarding mainly to children aged 3 to 12 years old, welcoming the children and informing their parents, supervising your students in a safe manner and following the mountain safety code, completing the student monitoring sheet, being dynamic and to communicate clearly and be respectful of the company's rules.

An Instructor's Journey

On average, our instructors will teach anywhere between 3 and 5 years on our mountains. It is the perfect job for high school, college and university students. Many instructors have been with us for over 10 years. It's the perfect mix of people with impressive careers, retirees and students, all united with the same goal of sharing their passion by teaching snow sports!

Important Dates To Remember

  • Week of November 13th, 2023 After your information session, we will contact you, BY PHONE, the week of November 13th to let you know if you have been selected as an instructor. You will then be required to provide your Social Security number and bank account information for direct deposit of your paycheck by November 19, 2023. It is your responsibility to ensure that your employee file is complete.
  • November 11th-12th, 2023 Upon confirmation of your hiring, your Snow School Director will invite you to a Training workshop meeting to be held on November 11th or 12th. Your attendance is mandatory, even if you already have a valid certification level.
  • November 25th and 26th, December 2nd and 3rd, 2023 We are offering free Level 1 preparatory training on November 25th and 26th and December 2nd and 3rd. Access tickets are included, so we recommend that you do not purchase a season pass until you have completed your Level 1 training. The number of training days may vary depending on individual experience.
  • December 9th-10th-16th-17th, 2023 Level 1 certification for skiers at Sommet Morin Heights
  • December 17th, 2023 1-day exam option (prerequisite) for snowboarders (at Sommet Morin Heights and Sommet Edelweiss)
  • December 27th to 30th, 2023 Level 1 certification for skiers and snowboarders at Sommet Morin Heights (for candidates who could not attend the dates offered above).
  • December 30th, 2023 1-day exam option (prerequisite) for snowboarders (at Sommet Morin Heights)
  • January 13th, 2024 Start of the Snow School Programs

Information Session

After the information session, your next step will be a training workshop on November 11th or 12th. Your Snow School Director will assign you to one of the two days and you will receive an email invitation. We also offer free Level 1 preparation training, which is highly recommended, on the following dates November 25 and 26, December 2 and 3. The number of training days may vary depending on your individual experience.

Training Workshop

The Training Workshop is mandatory for all new instructors, including those who are already certified. This meeting is essential to get to know your director, the daily operations of the Snow School and the specifics.

Level 1 Certification

Skiers & Snowboarders | The mandatory training to obtain Level 1 (on snow) will take place on December 9, 10, 16 and 17, 2023*. After this training and meeting the Level 1 criteria, you will be certified and can start your career as an instructor. *For candidates who are unable to attend on the above dates, it will be possible to complete the training on December 27, 28, 29 and 30, 2023.

Level 1 Certification | Ski

Below are the details of this certification.

What Is It?

The Level 1 Certification Course, in collaboration with the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance (CSIA), is designed to introduce and develop the basic skills for teaching new skiers of all ages with a focus on teaching children.

Time will be spent exploring:

  • Collaborative Teaching Approaches and Lesson Planning
  • CSIA Technical Concepts
  • Ski Improvement
  • Guest Service and Communication Skills

Candidates will receive coaching on their skiing, as well as feedback on their teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 1 standard in both of these areas. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach first-time skiers through Intermediate level students.  

The success of this certification is imperative to be in our employment.

Who Should Take This Course?

The Level 1 Certification Course is open to anyone with an interest in learning about how to teach skiing. Candidates on the Level 1 Course will explore skiing technique and teaching methods on Beginner up to Intermediate terrain.

Are There Prerequisites?

  • 14 years of age on the last day of the Course (ID must be presented)
  • Must be fluent in either English or French
  • Confident parallel skiing on Intermediate terrain

* It is important to note that in order to formalize your Level 1 Ski Certification, you must complete the season employed by the resort that issued your certification, otherwise it will no longer be valid.

Am I Ready?

CSIA Level 1 Certification includes skiing and teaching assessment and evaluation.

To help you succeed in your course, participate in the Level 1 preparatory training offered by les Sommets.

The training dates are as follows: November 25th and 26th, December 2nd and 3rd, 2023.

Please note that the number of training days may vary depending on individual experience.

Access tickets are included for these days and at any time until you receive your Level 1 Certification; therefore, we recommend that you do not purchase your Season Pass.

We understand that this may be an initial investment, which is why we offer reimbursement of this training after one year of employment (subject to certain conditions).

Be sure to confirm your return for the following year to qualify for this reimbursement.

Level 1 Certification | Snow

Below are the details of this certification.

What Is It?

The CASI Level 1 Certification is an introductory course, designed to give successful candidates the skills necessary to begin their role as a new instructor in the industry. Beginner teaching methods, understanding of basic snowboard technique, as well as lesson planning and effective communication skills will be addressed.

Candidates will receive coaching on their snowboarding, as well as feedback on their teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 1 standard in both of these areas. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach beginner snowboarders up to the Novice Turn level.

The Level 1 Certification is a pre-requisite for the CASI Level 2 Instructor Certification, as well as the Park Instructor Course.

Who Should Take This Course?

The CASI Level 1 Snowboard Instructor Certification Course is open to strong intermediate snowboarders, aged 15 years and older.

Candidates on the Level 1 Course will spend time exploring snowboarding technique and teaching methods across a variety of venues, both on-snow (up to and including intermediate terrain) and during indoor presentations.

You should take this course if you love to snowboard, and have a desire to introduce new students to snowboarding. You should be confident and comfortable both communicating and demonstrating in front of a group. 

Are There Prerequisites?

  • 15 years of age on the first day of the course (ID must be presented on Day 1)
  • Must be fluent in either English or French
  • Able to demonstrate comfortable and safe riding skills on intermediate terrain

Am I Ready?

The Level 1 Instructor standards require you to pass both riding and teaching evaluations.

To help you succeed in your certification, participate in the Level 1 preparatory training offered by les Sommets.

The training dates are as follows: November 25th and 26th, December 2nd and 3rd, 2023.

Please note that the number of training days may vary depending on individual experience.

Access tickets are included for these days and, at any time until you obtain your Level 1 Certification; we therefore advise you not to purchase your season pass.

For candidates who cannot attend on these dates, note that it will be possible to complete the internship on December 28th, 29th and 30th, 2023 as well as on January 6th , 2024 for the Level 1 one-day certification.

1 day option (prerequisite) costs: $248.

Why Are We The Best?

Awarded annually by the National Ski Area Association (NSAA), the Conversion Cup recognizes the efforts made by ski resorts in North America to convert neophytes into snow sports enthusiasts.

The Quiz

In order to complete your hiring for the 2023-2024 season, and following your Training workshop on November 11 and 12, 2023, you will have to complete the Quiz on the operating rules of our Snow Schools.

To take the quiz:

  • Select tab École.
  • The password to get access is: lessommets.
  • Then please read the operating rules in the document entitled The Guide which can be found in the red box on the right.
  • Finally click on The Quiz in the red box to assess your understanding of the operating rules. The password is hiver2024.

Complete the quiz with a minimum score of 80% to succeed. In the event that you do not succeed, your Snow School Director will contact you at the beginning of the season, but this will not affect your rehiring.

Once your questionnaire has been completed, your hiring will be final and you will be able to receive your employee pass on your first ski day at Sommet Saint-Sauveur or Sommet Edelweiss.
